Super Bowl Nuts for Sale to Benefit Community Organizations

The Kiwanis Club of Mount Clemens is now selling salted mixed nuts – perfect for Super Bowl parties - with all profits benefiting local nonprofit groups.

The gourmet nuts are available for $20 per canister, and each canister weighs in at nearly 3 lbs. – plenty for munching! Holiday nuts are available at some Mount Clemens businesses during normal business hours, including the Anton Art Center (586-469-8666; www.theartcenter.org) and Printing by Johnson (586-469-3555; www.printingbyjohnson.com).

Proceeds from the Nut Sale are dedicated to a variety of local nonprofits, including the Salvation Army, the Anton Art Center, Macomb Literacy Partners and the Crocker House. The Kiwanis Club of Mount Clemens supports these worthy organizations and many more throughout the year, with donations of time and money.

Konstanzer Fund Helps the Hearing Impaired

Warren resident Marjorie Anderson recently received new hearing aids, thanks to the Konstanzer Charitable Trust Fund administered by the Kiwanis Club of Mount Clemens. Club members were all smiles at a recent meeting, upon reading thank you cards sent in by Mrs. Anderson and her family.

"The hearing aids are a great blessing. I can never thank you enough," Mrs. Anderson wrote.

The Konstanzer Fund was established by an estate gift of club member Christian W. Konstanzer. Kiwanian Greg Dudek oversees outreach for the Fund and helped Mrs. Anderson with her application. In addition to providing hearing aids for those in need, the fund has also helped send families of hearing-impaired children to summer camp.

Scholarship Awarded to Mount Clemens High School Graduate

Diandre Johnson, a 2011 Mount Clemens High School graduate and resident of Mount Clemens, has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship by the Kiwanis Club of Mount Clemens.

Mr. Johnson plans to attend Kettering University in the fall to study Computer Engineering.

“We on the Scholarship Committee were impressed with Diandre’s entire record – academics, community service, sports. He’s an outstanding young man and an asset to our community,” said Jennifer Callans, chair of the club’s Scholarship Committee.

The Kiwanis Club of Mount Clemens awards a scholarship annually, to a college-bound high school senior who lives within Mount Clemens Community School’s district, regardless of what high school they attend.

As a community service organization, the club looks for volunteerism and service in addition to a high grade point average.

“There were several strong applicants this year,” said Scholarship Committee member Don Worrell. “I’m glad we were able to recognize a student who lives in Mount Clemens and attends our community’s high school.”

BIKE RODEO SATURDAY MARCH 7, 1-3 PM

Join the Kiwanis Club of Mount Clemens for a Bike Rodeo! Up to 300 children's helmets will be given away while supplies last. Rosco the Clown will be on-hand, too!

Two children's bikes will also be raffled off, free, one ticket per child.

Other activities will include safety checks & demos, a bike-decorating station and more.

Activities will take place on Macomb Place between North Main Street and North Walnut Street, in downtown Mount Clemens, just in front of ABC Magic.

Applicants must reside in Mount Clemens Community School’s district, regardless of what high school they attend.

Kiwanis Club Partners with Macomb Literacy

The Kiwanis Club of Mount Clemens recently presented Macomb Literacy Partners with donations totaling $1,200. MLP Director Ted Bolak attended a regular Kiwanis Club luncheon on February 16, 2011 at Trinity Lutheran Church to receive the donations.

Club President Gerry Marker presented two donations to MLP:
• $700 to support Macomb Literacy Partners general programs
• $500 to support the Read to Me, Rosco program

Mount Clemens resident Ross Champion, aka Rosco the Clown, is an active Kiwanis Club member as well as a supporter of Macomb Literacy Partners. “Macomb Literacy Partners does so much good in our community. I’m happy to be involved as Rosco, and I’m happy that the Kiwanis Club supporters MLP’s activities.”

Scholarship winners announced!

The Kiwanis Club of Mount Clemens is pleased to announced that the club will award scholarships to two college-bound students who live in Mount Clemens.

Valerie King, who will study broadcast journalism at Northwestern University, has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship.

Austin Distlerath, who will attend Albion College to pursue exercise science, has been awarded a $750 scholarship.

Both students recently graduated from Mount Clemens High School, and exemplify the best combination of academic achievement and community service.

The Kiwanis Club has intended to award a single, $1,000 scholarship, but club members were so impressed by the extensive pool of applicants that a special provision was made this year only, to award a second scholarship.

Congratulations to Valerie and Austin on their success! We are proud to have such young people representing Mount Clemens.

Mount Clemens Kiwanis travel to Jamaica

Some Michiganians head to the Caribbean in the winter for warmth and relaxation. Some Michigan Kiwanians spend their time in Jamaica working up a sweat and putting up buildings for orphans.

As a Kiwanis International official, Mark Rabaut from the Kiwanis Club of Utica Shelby had the opportunity to visit the Kiwanis clubs in the Caribbean where he learned about the needs of orphans. The project of a Pennsylvania Kiwanis club building dorms for the West Haven Children's Home for disabled children caught his attention.

Last month, members of the Utica Shelby Club — Rabaut, Chuck Nagy and his son Brent, Kelley Mires, Ray Pini, Barb Fisher and Janet Harrell — went on another "Mission Jamaica" with Lisa Manzella from the Shelby Daybreakers Kiwanis Club, and Evelyn McKenzie and Lori Stillwell from the Mount Clemens Kiwanis.

Pancake Breakfast Placemat Ads to Benefit MCREST

For only $50, you can share a goodwill message or promote your business to benefit the Macomb County Rotating Emergency Shelter Team (MCREST), and aid their efforts in providing emergency shelter for our homeless community. Your message or ad will appear on paper placemats used at the Mount Clemens Kiwanis annual Pancake Breakfast.

Last year’s placemat ads raised $1,500. This year, MCREST will be the sole beneficiary of all funds raised through placemat ads. The cost of printing the placemats is underwritten by Printing by Johnson.

Placemats are printed in black ink on several seasonal paper colors. The standard ad size is 2” high by 3.5” wide. Custom sizes are available. To place a Pancake Breakfast placemat ad, or to inquire about custom sizes, contact Jill at Printing by Johnson at 586-469-3555. Ad copy and payment must be received by March 15, 2010.

Over 1,000 people attend the Pancake Breakfast, held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Clinton Township each year on Palm Sunday. This year’s 16th Annual Pancake Breakfast is scheduled for 8:30 am to 1:00 pm, Sunday, March 28th.

Mount Clemens Service Clubs Raise Over $7,000 for the Salvation Army

The Kiwanis Club of Mount Clemens challenged the Mount Clemens Rotary Club to a bell-ringing contest to raise money for the Salvation Army, netting over $7,000.

Members of both clubs volunteered their time December 5 and 12, 2009, to bell-ring at Red Kettles outside the Chesterfield Township Walmart Supercenter.

The Kiwanis Club raised over $4,600 - so the Rotarians will be serving us lunch!
